- Enclosed is version 1.0d5 of my "Default Application" configuration
- utility for System 7. For those using 1.0d3, this version fixes crashes
- reported by some users (which were due to my trying to lock a non-
- existent handle during initialization). I recommend that everybody
- using version 1.0d3 upgrade to this version.
-
- For those who've never heard of it, Default Application lets you
- configure the default application list in Finder 7.0. When you double-
- click a document whose creator can't be found, the Finder will check
- this internal list to see if it specifies an alternative application
- which can be used to open documents of that type. The standard list
- lets you open text and PICT files with TeachText; you can add entries
- to this list, so that you can open MacPaint documents with Canvas, or
- Word documents with MacWrite II, if you don't happen to have MacPaint
- or Word, for example.
-
- Default Application differs from other Finder-patching utilities in
- that it is a control panel. This means it can make changes without
- having to quit and restart the Finder, and the changes take effect
- immediately. Also there is no INIT code that needs to be loaded at
- boot time.
-
- Bug reports, comments etc welcome.
